‘On The Same Page: Building Jewish Community – One Book At A Time’

Long Island’s first Jewish community-wide read finished a successful second season. Hundreds of adults in communities throughout Long Island read the same book at the same time and participate in a variety of creative and educational programs in different of settings and formats. We invite you to download the 2008 OTSP Information Guide.

The 2008 book is Coming Together, Coming Apart, by Daniel Gordis. Gordis’ memoir depicts a vivid portrait of life in Israel. Having made aliyah in 1998, with then small children, Gordis shares aspects of a typical Israeli life with family, friends and colleagues that might be considered anything but normal. Through his eyes, Israel is set apart from other places; to quote him: “Israel is a place where life goes through you”.

Nearly 40 Jewish and public institutions on Long Island have participated in our reads, reaching close to 1,000 adults. Creative and educational events take place throughout Long Island. During OTSP’s second year programming was expanded into the public library system, reaching a wider and less Jewishly affiliated audience. Cultivating creative partnerships have led to deeper and richer programming. And working even closer with selected liaisons helped us reach a younger target audience. To date we’ve brought in terrific speakers, helped to support the local lay and professional leaders, and have created a project that educators and individuals alike look forward to year to year.

On The Same Page’ is offered in cooperation with J-Learn and the BJE of Greater New York, Nassau/Queens Center.  For complete registration and a calendar of events go to www.otsp.org.  Shariee Calderone is the program coordinator. Click here for group participation information.

The Morasha Teacher Preparation Institute is SAJES premier adult learning and teacher preparation program.  You, the adult learner, are invited to take one or more courses in any subject area that interests you: Hebrew, Torah, liturgy, history and more.  While the main objective for students enrolling in Morasha is to teach in area congregational school settings, a number of adults come to Morasha to become part of this wonderful learning community.  Suri Jacknis is the Morasha Director.  New classes begin in September; both day and evening classes are offered.
